about

Trace Mountains is the personal music project of Northeast American songwriter, Dave Benton (28). Benton and his 4-piece band from New York have been touring nationally since the release of last year's A Partner to Lean On and have begun work on another stylistically eclectic indie rock record, tracking at Studio G and at home in Brooklyn.

In comparison to the rest of Trace Mountains' catalog, the stark bedroom pop track Where It Goes is a bit of an anomaly, featuring effected vocals backed by deep 808s, woody acoustic guitars and mellotron strings reminiscent of Sparklehorse. Originally written as an upbeat folk-rock song inspired by Elliot Smith, Benton re-imagined the song with darker, synthesizer-based instrumentation, creating a minimal electronic song that widens the sonic palette of his new collection of songs. Mixed by Amy Fort & mastered by Nicholas Bolton.

lyrics

Lindsay told me where the sun goes
She might have been a kid but I think she knows
While we were hiding, playing dress-up yard
Her mom came out & told me I had to go

Lindsay knows
Where it goes
But she would never tell you so
I will hold it in my mind to make it alright

Just this week I thought about her on the thruway
How her daddy died on a Tuesday
Her mother looked at me like she knew what I was thinking
She’s always told me the same thing

Lindsay knows
Where he goes
But she would never tell me so
I am asking you to tell me if you know
Where it goes
She would never tell me so
I am asking you to tell me if you know

My daddy told me how the moon glows
Rises like the sun, in the night is shown
& when it shines on me, he can hear what I am thinking
I think I’m always thinking the same thing
